Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland with a very ancient history. Founded by the Romans, it was then subjected to the influence of the Germanic peoples to become one of the most important merchant centers in Europe in the 14th century. With the Reformation, in 1519, the economy acquired further value, so that Zurich quickly became the financial center of Switzerland.
Even today, Zurich is known for being an important financial hub, in fact the National Bank has its headquarters in Zurich.
For years, Zurich has ranked among the cities with the highest quality of life in the world. It is home to Switzerland's most important airport and is one of the first cities in Switzerland to be visited.
Zurich is also an important cultural center: it is home to the ETH Zurich, one of the most important technical universities in the world.
In addition to being an important financial hub, it is also a bustling commercial city: along the famous Bahnhofstrasse it is a veritable shopping paradise where boutiques of the best brands, jewelers and watch shops typical of this nation follow one another.
Throughout the year, various kinds of events are organized in the city that attract thousands of people from all over Europe: in February and March the characteristic carnival with float parades; in June and July the Zuerich Festival is organized for opera fans. In August, the city streets come alive with the famous Street Parade, the so-called Mid-August festival.
During the Christmas season the city dresses up: the famous Christmas markets invade the streets of the center and beyond. The central station (Hauptbahnhof) in Zurich hosts one of the largest covered Christmas markets in Europe. About 150 decorated stalls are a source of inspiration for many gift ideas. In the middle of the monumental atrium of the railway station shine about 7000 crystal ornaments of the gigantic Christmas tree, which enchants children and adults.
