Montreux is located between the steep hills on the shores of Lake Geneva and in Roman times it was made up of a cluster of modest villages. Subsequently, the city developed during the Middle Ages and then over the centuries became a small town of European fame. His fame began in the nineteenth century when, also thanks to his special Mediterranean microclimate, he became a favorite destination of noble and wealthy English people who saw in this "Pearl of the Lake", the ideal place to spend their holidays.
On a small island adjacent to the shore is the Castle of Chillon, built in medieval times, with fortification walls, large halls and a chapel with frescoes from the 14th century. For almost four centuries Chillon was the residence of the Counts of Savoy.
The historic center is dotted with narrow streets and small shops and is a starting point for many walks.
One of the attractions of the town is its Casino where the pages of musical history have been written since the 1960s with guests of the caliber of Queen, Doors, Rolling Stones. Freddie Mercury lived in an apartment overlooking the lake and bought the recording studio "Mountain Studio"; in memory of the presence of Freddie Mercury in Montreux, his bronze statue dominates the lakefront since 1996.
During the Christmas period the shores of the lake light up and host the numerous festively decorated wooden houses where handicraft products, typical local products and many gift ideas are sold.
