Along a stretch of coast of the eastern Ligurian Riviera about 10 km long overlook the Cinque Terre, five ancient villages overlooking the sea: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.
They are considered one of the major Italian tourist destinations for their rare beauty and in 1997 they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage.
The seabed of the Cinque Terre is considered to be among the most varied and rich in maritime fauna of Liguria; its waters are also an ideal habitat for dolphins that can be found in the area until late spring when the flow of boats is a source of disturbance to marine fauna.
The Cinque Terre were a place of refuge for many writers, including the Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale, who spent long stays in Monterosso, drawing inspiration for his works.
This area is also very famous from the gastronomic point of view for the production of wines and for some typical dishes including the salted anchovies of Riomaggiore and the lemon jam tart spread in this area.
